Julie F. Brown, LICSW, has been providing individual and group therapy for individuals with learning and behavioral challenges for over 20 years. She has presented and trained extensively in the areas of sexual offender treatment and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Intensively trained in DBT in 1999, Ms. Brown has been working specifically on utilizing DBT with individuals who have difficulties learning, as well as, serious behavioral dyscontrol. In 2005, she became a trainer with Dr. Marsha Linehan’s Behavioral Tech, LLC in Seattle, WA. Over the past decade, Ms. Brown developed the Skills System, which is an adaptive coping skills curriculum for intellectually disabled individuals that is based on DBT principles. She recently published The Skills Instructor’s Guide: An Emotion Regulation Skills Curriculum for All Learning Abilities (2011). Additionally, she co-authored a pilot research study with Milton Brown, PhD, examining the effectiveness of this model. Ms. Brown is currently attending Simmons College to earn her PhD in Social Work.
