Melanie S. Harned, Ph.D., received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Wesleyan University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her predoctoral psychology internship at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School and then served as a postdoctoral research fellow with Dr. Lisa Najavits at McLean. She also completed a clinical postdoctoral fellowship at Two Brattle Center, a DBT outpatient clinic in Cambridge, MA. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Dr. Marsha Linehan at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington. Dr. Harned currently works as a Research Scientist in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington and is the Research Director of Dr. Linehan’s clinic. Since 2005, she has been an adherence coder for individual and group DBT and has worked as a DBT Research Therapist on Dr. Linehan’s ongoing DBT clinical trials. She is also a Co-Investigator with Dr. Linehan on her NIMH and NIDA-funded research. Starting in 2009, Dr. Harned also works as a Research Scientist at Behavioral Tech Research, Inc. and is involved in a variety of research projects focused on developing effective methods for disseminating evidence-based treatments to community mental health settings. Dr. Harned’s expertise lies in the application of DBT and exposure-based treatments to complex cases of PTSD. Dr. Harned is currently developing a protocol that can be added to DBT to treat co-occurring PTSD in BPD clients. Since 2004, she has guest lectured in undergraduate and graduate-level courses on DBT and exposure treatments and has led community trainings on applications of DBT to the treatment of PTSD and trauma-related problems. She is licensed as a psychologist in the state of Washington.
