Laurence Y. Katz, MD, FRCPC, is currently Professor and Head, Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is a psychiatrist on the Intensive Child and Adolescent Treatment Service where he is the team leader of the adolescent DBT outpatient service. He is also a senior DBT Trainer with Behavioral Tech, LLC in Seattle, Washington.
He took his medical training at the University of Manitoba and earned his M.D. in 1993. He took his adult psychiatry training at the University of Manitoba and then went to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y. to complete his training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry. He earned his board certification in 1998. While at Einstein he spent 2 years training in DBT for suicidal adolescents supervised by Dr. Alec Miller.
His main areas of research interest are in suicide, the treatment of suicidal behavior and psychiatric epidemiology. He holds or is a co-investigator on numerous grants in these areas of interest. He has been invited to speak on these topics at international conferences and has published extensively in the area.
