Faria Kamal, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University Medical Center and a licensed clinical psychologist in New York City. Dr. Kamal completed her internship/residency and post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine, specializing in DBT with adults and adolescents. Dr. Kamal is a founding member of the ISITDBT Anti-Racism Committee. ISITDBT is a volunteer organization of DBT professionals tasked with organizing an annual conference to bring together DBT clinicians nationally and internationally to increase knowledge and fidelity to the treatment.
Her research has focused on providing effective mental health services to underserved communities, along with the assessment, implementation, and adaptation of behavioral practices to better serve diverse populations. For the past decade, Dr. Kamal has provided trainings to thousands of mental health providers on topics related to behavioral therapy, evidence-based clinical practices, and tailoring clinical services for underserved patients. She has also developed the first foundational DBT training on providing clinical services to diverse populations.
Dr. Kamal is also the founder of Thrive Mind Clinic, which aims to provide effective, evidence-based, behavioral treatment for adolescents, adults, and families. Prior to starting her private practice, Dr. Kamal served as the Team Leader for DBT Services within the Columbia Day Program, where she helped create and build adherent DBT group treatment within an intensive outpatient setting, along with training and supervising medical students, externs, post-doctoral fellows, and staff.
