Skills for DBT Team Leaders to Promote Team Adherence

Course Description

A DBT team leader is crucial to the success of any program. Team leaders must combine skills in leadership, organizational negotiation, and enhanced clinical acumen to effectively lead their team. This training course is the only training specifically designed for DBT Team leaders. As such, it requires that participants must currently be a member of a DBT team applying comprehensive DBT. It assumes that all participants are comprehensively trained in DBT (Intensive or Foundational training). It is also suitable for those aspiring to develop the skills to take on the role of a DBT team leader.

The training will use multiple instructional methods, including lecture, demonstrations, practice exercises, and small group feedback to achieve its aims. Topics addressed include developing relevant leadership skills and shaping adherence in multiple modes of DBT. The training will also build on specific consultation questions submitted by participants.

This live remote instructor-led training will be delivered via video conference embedded in a learning management system (LMS) for a total of 13 instructor-led hours. This course has been developed by Prof. Michaela Swales and Dr. Christine Dunkley, who look forward to working with participants to pass on the skills that they have learned in how to lead an effective DBT team.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how the role of team leaders assists in structuring the DBT environment.
  2. Explain the importance of the liaison between the DBT Team Lead and the wider organizational context.
  3. Describe organizational goals and how these relate to the DBT team.
  4. Assess the assets, and address the deficits, of the DBT team.
  5. Utilize authority strategically in shaping the organizational relationship.
  6. Identify the dialectics of the team leader role.
  7. Shape their DBT program structure in the service of treatment fidelity.
  8. Identify areas of strengths and areas for development of the DBT program.
  9. Describe features of an adherent consultation team.
  10. Describe common behaviors pulling teams off adherence.
  11. Identify behaviors that enhance the effectiveness of consultation team.
  12. Develop a systematic strategy to address consultation interfering behaviors.
  13. Enhance team leader skills in shaping target hierarchies on team.
  14. Describe common problems in target hierarchy construction.
  15. Rectify common problems in DBT programs.
  16. Provide feedback to colleagues about target hierarchies.
  17. Enhance team leader skills in shaping adherence in individual therapy.
  18. Develop skills in identifying common problems in behavioral and solution analysis
  19. Identify solutions to common problems.
  20. Identify features of behavior chain analyses and solution analyses that need shaping.

Michaela Swales, PhD

Michaela Swales, PhD Michaela Swales, PhDColwyn Bay (United Kingdom) Michaela Swales, PhD, is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Professor in Clinical Psychology on the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme, Bangor University.  She trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy in Seattle in 1994 / 95 with Marsha Linehan and for twenty years ran a clinical programme for suicidal young people in an inpatient service.  Professor Swales is the Director of the British Isles Training Team, an International Affiliate of the Linehan Institute.  She has trained more than a thousand professionals in DBT, seeding over 400 programmes, in both the UK and further afield.  She co-authored, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Distinctive Features (2009; 2017) and Changing Behavior in DBT: Problem-Solving in Action (2015).  She is the Editor of the Oxford Handbook of DBT (2019).  Her primary research interest is the effective implementation of evidence-based psychological therapies in routine clinical practice. Professor Swales was a member of the Working Group on Classification of Personality Disorders, reporting to the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

Christine Dunkely, DClinP

Christine Dunkely, DClinP   Christine Dunkely, DClinPChristine Dunkley, DClinP, is a consultant trainer with the British Isles DBT Training team and honorary lecturer on the Post Graduate Diploma in DBT at Bangor University. She has a doctorate in Clinical Practice from the school of health sciences at the University of Southampton, and an honours degree and certificate of qualification in Social work. She began working as a medical social worker in 1982 and a psychological therapist in 1994. She is an accredited therapist and supervisor with the Society for DBT (UK and Ireland) and a senior accredited practitioner with BACP. She is a Fellow and Vice President of SfDBT. Christine trained in DBT in 2001 and had supervision with Heidi Heard who worked on the original trials with Marsha Linehan. She is trained to calibration in the University of Washington DBT adherence rating scale. She worked in the Winchester DBT team and specialised in seeing the patients who were at the point of being referred into expensive out-of-area placements because of more severe difficulties than could be handled in routine care. She and the team received an award from the Trust for their work on this service. She trained and supervised clinicians on the 5-year Implementation of DBT in Ireland, and was a consultant on the pilot site for a large NHS RCT in RO-DBT. Christine started offering training in DBT internally at Southern Health NHS Trust where she was employed. She joined the British Isles DBT training team in 2006, eventually rising to Consultant trainer.  She has trained on 48 intensives, 26 Foundation courses, and over 200 workshops, making her the most prolific trainer in the British Isles DBT training team, and one of the most experienced trainers worldwide.  She has given an exemplar lecture at the annual DBT trainers meeting in Seattle, and taught on the Linehan Institute induction program for new international trainers. Since writing her books on Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation she has also been in demand as a speaker all over the world, in person and online. As a very experienced trainer she has consulted on difficult cases in every setting imaginable, from prisons, to perinatal units, and from specialist PD services to community treatment teams, with both adolescent and adult clients. She is well recognised for her expertise. She was the first chair of the Society for DBT (UK and Ireland) and awarded a fellowship for her services in 2016. She has written over 20 publications including 3 books, and 3 chapters in the Handbook of DBT edited by Michaela Swales. Her article based on her research into Hearing the Suicidal Patient’s Emotional Pain topped the ‘most read’ chart in Crisis journal for over a year. Her co-authored paper with Michaela Swales on Skills Assessment in DBT was given an honorary mention in the 2021 Psyche awards.

IMPORTANT: Two weeks prior to the training, participants will receive an email from our Online Portal (powered by Thinkific) with a sign-in URL for this training. Please follow the instructions in the email to log in to our Online Portal and set your password, prior to Day 1 of the training.

Participants will retain access to the online course until 1 month after the last training session date. All course requirements must be completed before course access expires.

CE NOTE: Behavioral Tech calculates the continuing education credits for this training by the start time and end time. 100 percent attendance is required, as is signing IN and OUT each morning and afternoon, to receive CE credits. Only participants with 100% attendance, and who have completed the Post-Event Evaluation and passed their Final Exam with a score of 75% or higher will receive credit. Behavioral Tech cannot offer partial credit. Please remember to sign in and sign out each day to document your attendance.
