Training Description

This five-day training is designed specifically for individual therapists or skills trainers who are members of an intensively trained DBT team, but have not completed Intensive training themselves. It is meant to assist teams that have hired new staff or experienced turnover by allowing newer team members to get trained in the standard content of DBT. Lecture, video, role-play and small group exercises will be used to teach DBT theory and strategies in depth. Participants agree to attend the entire five days of training, do their best to learn the material, and participate in a willing, committed manner.

The training requires that participants work in an active DBT® program, participate in a consultation team, and will continue learning DBT with a mentor. Only people who have attended the full ten days of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Training™ are able to serve as mentors and sponsor team members to a Foundational Training.

Training Objectives

  1. Participate in a DBT Consultation Team.
  2. Demonstrate Consultation Team strategies used in DBT.
  3. List the modes, the functions, and the typical treatment agreements made in DBT.
  4. Implement the structure, goals, and stages of DBT treatment.
  5. Teach the four DBT skills modules (Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance).
  6. Explain the Biosocial Model of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other severe disorders in all required treatment contexts.
  7. Create DBT treatment plans for clients using targeting procedures.
  8. Explain the dialectical nature of DBT.
  9. Demonstrate how dialectics are used in DBT.
  10. Conduct Cue Exposure and Response Prevention.
  11. List the steps in Problem-Solving.
  12. Conduct complete Behavioral Chain Analyses and solution analyses.
  13. Implement the Cognitive-Behavioral strategies in DBT.
  14. Identify the levels of validation and the contexts in which they apply.
  15. Demonstrate the use of validation to balance the change strategies in treatment.
  16. Demonstrate the different communication strategies of DBT.
  17. Implement the DBT case management strategies.
  18. Implement telephone coaching and other generalization strategies of DBT.
  19. Apply suicide crisis protocols of DBT.
  20. Discuss the DBT research for different populations.

Adam Payne, PhD

Adam Payne, PhD New Hyde Park, NY (United States) Adam Payne, PhDAdam Payne, Ph.D., is a DBT - Linehan Board of Certification, Certified DBT Clinician. Dr. Payne received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1996. Dr. Payne served as the conference chairperson for the 2012 and 2013 conferences of the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (ISITDBT). ISITDBT is a volunteer organization with the sole task of organizing an annual conference to bring together DBT clinicians from around the US and around the globe. Dr. Payne served ten years as a Clinical Supervisor at the University of Washington for graduate students in clinical psychology at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics (BRTC). He has provided training and consultation in Dialectical Behavior Therapy internationally for Behavioral Tech, LLC since 2002. Dr. Payne is a founding member of the Center for Cognitive and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (CCDBT). Founded in 2006, the CCDBT aims to provide effective, evidence-based, psychotherapeutic treatments for children, adolescents, and adults. The main office of this center is in Lake Success, NY on Long Island. The cornerstones of the CCDBT are programs in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for both adults and for adolescents. Prior to the formation of the CCDBT, Dr. Payne served as the Clinical Coordinator of the Adolescent DBT Program at Schneider Children’s Hospital. Beginning in 1999, the team developed a comprehensive Adolescent DBT program at Schneider Children’s Hospital, part of the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System. More locally, Dr. Payne has been an invited speaker to school districts and mental health settings to present information about the application of DBT to adolescent populations. Dr. Payne also previously served as the staff psychologist of the Adolescent Treatment Team of the Child and Adolescent Day Hospital at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Prior to the formation of the CCDBT, Dr. Payne also maintained a faculty practice for treatment of children, adolescents, and adults within Zucker Hillside Hospital on Long Island.

Francheska Perepletchikova, PhD

Francheska Perepletchikova, PhD White Plains, NY (United States) Francheska Perepletchikova, PhDFrancheska Perepletchikova, Ph.D. is a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification Board Certified Clinician is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Perepletchikova received her B.A. degree at St. John's University and graduated with a gold medal for the highest academic average. Dr. Perepletchikova received graduate training in two disciplines -- developmental and clinical psychology. She obtained an M.A. in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1996 and received Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Yale University Department of Psychology in 2007 (with the James B. Grossman Best Dissertation Prize). During her internship and post-doctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Perepletchikova gained expertise in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). She obtained intensive and advanced intensive trainings in DBT with Dr. Linehan. Further, Dr. Perepletchikova has been established as able to deliver DBT with adherence and calibration as a reliable DBT adherence rater by Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington. In 2015, she became a BTech trainer. In 2016 Dr. Perepletchikova became a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification Board Certified Clinician. Dr. Perepletchikova has a long-standing interest in emotion regulation, trauma-related psychopathology, depressive and anxiety problems, suicidality and self-harm behaviors. Her research focuses on childhood psychopathology, psychotherapy development, and evaluation of treatment integrity in treatment outcome research. As a faculty at Yale University and Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Perepletchikova developed Dialectical Behavior Therapy for children and conducted several randomized clinical trials to empirically validate this model. This line of research has been funded by the grants from NIMH, NRSA and private foundations. Dr. Perepletchikova authored 25 journal articles and book chapters for the book Treatment Integrity in Treatment Outcome Research (2009). She has conducted over 60 lectures, presentations and workshops around the world. As a clinician, Dr. Perepletchikova is currently in private practice. She is a Founding Director of the Youth-Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Program that specializes in treating children with severe emotional and behavioral dysregulation and training clinicians in the approach.

Prerequisites

Participants should meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a current member of an Intensively trained team.
  2. Be invested in learning DBT to a high standard in order to better implement the treatment in their usual settings. Participants agree to attend and fully participate in the entire training in a willing, committed manner.
  3. Have learned DBT in one-day or two-day trainings and/or from self-guided study of the treatment manuals.
  4. Agree to read the following books before the Foundational Training:

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors: Behavioral Tech, LLC is approved by the NAADAC – the Association for Addiction Professionals, Provider #77431. This activity is approved for 33 contact hours. Behavioral Tech will email you a letter documenting your attendance upon successful completion of the activity.

Mental Health Counselors: Behavioral Tech has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5885. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Behavioral Tech is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. Behavioral Tech has allocated 33 clock hours for this activity.

Nurses: Behavioral Tech, LLC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Behavioral Tech designates this educational activity for a maximum of 33 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Continuing Medical Education is accepted by the ANCC for nursing certification renewal. At the end of the training, each Nurse must complete and sign the provided form to record the number of credits claimed. Keep one copy & return the other copy to Behavioral Tech.

 Psychiatrists: Behavioral Tech, LLC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Behavioral Tech designates this educational activity for a maximum of 33 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. At the end of the training, each Physician must complete and sign the provided form to record the number of credits claimed. Keep one copy & return the other copy to Behavioral Tech.

 Psychologists: Behavioral Tech, LLC is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Behavioral Tech maintains responsibility for the program and its content. Behavioral Tech has allocated 33 hours of CE within APA guidelines. Behavioral Tech will email you a letter documenting your attendance after successful completion of the program.

Social Workers: Behavioral Tech SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers, #0040. Behavioral Tech has allocated 33 live contact hours for this activity. Behavioral Tech will email a letter documenting attendance to participants with 100% completion of the program and homework.
