DBT Skills Training: The Essentials

Training Description

This two-day workshop covers the fundamentals of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills: Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Participants learn how to plan, structure, and conduct DBT skills classes. This workshop also addresses the targets for skills training, as well as how to apply fundamental DBT strategies in skills training. Extensive teaching and use of clinical examples are used to illustrate specific skills training procedures, assignment and review of homework with clients, and troubleshooting common skills training obstacles. This course is designed for all mental health professionals who want to learn to teach DBT skills or to improve their teaching with clients. This training will include the original DBT skills as developed by Dr. Linehan, and will incorporate material from her recently published DBT® Skills Training Manual, Second Edition.

Training Objectives:

  • Describe the dialectical nature of DBT skills training.
  • Identify the strategies and procedures required for effective teaching of DBT skills.
  • Utilize recent updates to DBT skills training.
  • Explain the DBT skills modules.
  • Structure DBT skills training for specific populations and settings.
  • Effectively review DBT skills training homework.

Primary Objective: As a result of this training participants will be able to do DBT skills training.

Nick L. Salsman, PhD, ABPP

Nick L. Salsman, PhD, ABPP Cincinnati, OH (United States)   Nick L. Salsman, PhD, ABPPNicholas L. Salsman, PhD, ABPP, is a professor of psychology at Xavier University where he is the director of the Xavier University Psychological Services Center and runs the Xavier University Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program. Dr. Salsman is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Society for Clinical Psychology. Dr. Salsman received his BA from Transylvania University and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Louisville. He completed an internship at the adult and child psychiatry departments of Vanderbilt University. He also served as a postdoctoral fellow and research associate for Dr. Marsha Linehan at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics (BRTC) at the University of Washington from 2005-2007. While at the BRTC, he served as a DBT therapist on two large randomized clinical trials of DBT and an adherence coder on two research trials. He has published on topics including DBT, Borderline Personality Disorder, and emotion regulation. He has regularly given local, national, and international workshops, presentations, and invited talks on DBT, has consulted with and trained clinicians at various facilities, and trains and supervises doctoral clinical psychology students. Dr. Salsman has received grant funding to develop adaptations of DBT for older adults with complicated grieving and older adults with chronic pain. He is licensed as a psychologist in the state of Ohio.

Cancellation, Substitutions, and Refunds

Registration fees, minus a $50 service charge, will be refunded to participants who send a written cancellation via mail to Behavioral Tech or via email to info@behavioraltech.org postmarked no less than 15 days before the training. No refunds will be made thereafter. A colleague may be substituted for no extra charge if Behavioral Tech, LLC is notified at least two business days before the training. Seat Availability for Onsite Events

The number of seats for our open-enrollment workshops and our application-based trainings is limited by the physical training space that is reserved for the event. Please complete your registration or submit your application at your earliest convenience, as we will not guarantee a seat for you until we have received your registration or tuition payment.

Mental Health Counselors
Behavioral Tech is approved by a NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. The allocated clock hours for this activity = 12.5. Behavioral Tech will email you a letter documenting your attendance upon successful completion of the activity.

Nurses
Behavioral Tech is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Continuing Medical Education is accepted by the ANCC for nursing certification renewal. The maximum AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ designated by Behavioral Tech for this activity = 12.5. At the end of the training, each Nurse must complete and sign the provided form to record the number of credits claimed. Counselor, Social Worker & Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board – Ohio State*
Behavioral Tech will apply to the CSWMFT Board – Ohio to offer continuing education to counselors, social workers and MFT. Behavioral Tech will email a certificate of attendance upon 100% completion of this activity. The allocated clock hours for this activity = 12.5.
